Sydney-based barrister Philippe Doyle Gray offers bespoke commercial and civil litigation representation, from preliminary legal advice to negotiation, mediation, facilitation, appearance at trial, and advocacy on appeal. He excels in commercial disputes with thorny problems posed by lost trust, difficult personalities, professional incompetence, and personal dishonesty.

Philippe has subject-matter expertise in disputes between barristers, solicitors, and clients over legal costs and legal-profession regulation. He has practice-area expertise in civil cases concerning crime, fraud, or other serious misconduct, and “commercial divorce” by successful business people.

Of greatest professional interest to him are the financial and taxation consequences to victims of white-collar crimes, professional discipline, professional negligence, and complex commercial litigation.

25 years and 3,500 cases

After 20 years at the Bar following 5 years as a solicitor, Philippe has the breadth and depth of experience to give frank, sensible advice with confident, effective advocacy.

Accepting briefs from solicitors in private practice, direct briefs from in-house legal departments, and direct access work from professional clients such as accountants and engineers, Philippe has represented a vast array of clients in most types of non-criminal disputes in over 3,500 cases.

He spends most time working in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and occasionally in the Federal Court of Australia and the District Court of New South Wales. He has represented clients in most of the courts and tribunals of New South Wales, and several Commonwealth courts and tribunals including the Supreme Court of Norfolk Island and the High Court of Australia.

A lawyer’s lawyer

Philippe is regularly briefed by other barristers needing their own advocate and is regularly engaged for his counsel by solicitors needing advice for themselves.

He has advised and represented dozens of barristers, solicitors, and their families over many years.

Client care

Life's problems seldom fit inside neat boxes, and legal disputes rarely fit inside a single field of law. Each dispute will also have unique issues and complexity, making litigation inherently unpredictable and stressful.

Philippe has the knowledge and training to quickly get across complex, document-intensive evidence and legal material, creating order, and freeing up valuable lawyer time.

When providing service to his clients, Philippe offers telephone, in-person, or video conferencing to be as accommodating as possible. He keeps his clients regularly updated to set clear expectations, and when handling issues or queries he speaks simply and concisely.

Committed to quality professional service, Philippe fearlessly protects his client's best interests. He works diligently to see their situation improve and for justice to be served.

As a former solicitor, Philippe is sensitive to client engagement management. He strives for open, honest, and polite communication with clients and colleagues.

Pro bono and almsgiving

Working pro bono publico—for the public good—is a hallmark of the learned professions: divinity, medicine, and law. Philippe represents persons referred by a court or the New South Wales Bar Association’s Legal Assistance Referral Scheme (LARS). Each year, he provides free legal services to a market value exceeding $50,000.
